One of the most watched sporting events in the UK is the 6 Nations Rugby Championship. The annual international competition was once known as the Five Nations Championship, but after Italy joined the title was changed. The championship tournament involves the best teams from six countries including; Scotland, Wales, Italy, Ireland, France and of course, England. The winner is often referred to as the European Champion.
The event kicks off in early February and the fifth round usually takes place in mid-March and is considered one of the most thrilling events in rugby.  Grand Slams are achieved with each game victory and a Triple Crown is achieved by any “Home Nation” over other “Home Nations” and beginning in 2006 a trophy is awarded to those who can accomplish the feat.
In addition to the weekly 6 Nations competitions, there are individual competitions taking place as well. The Calcutta Cup is one of the oldest existing competitions taking place between England and Scotland since 1879 with the winner taking home the cup.
England and Ireland fight for the Millennium Trophy and France and Italy dual for the Guiseppe Garilbaldi Trophy created for the 200th anniversary of the Italian hero. And the unlucky country who finishes last in the 6 Nations is reported to win a Wooded Spoon award. While there is no longer an actual wooden spoon to give out, there is reportedly an actual award given out to the last place team.
